You can't effectively market to people you just don't understand. Guests come for reasons you don't know about until you have completed a Red Card Survey in some form. The cards give you the facts; and those facts replace your guesses. With the facts you can start to persuade through the website content and appeal directly to their reasons for coming to the area. In other words, your hotel can look like the most obvious place to stay.
Here below is a full size picture of a Red Card. We used red cards and yellow pencils because the staff and guests can see them in any light, those colors make them very visible and less easy to lose.

Getting us to run the whole survey and collating the results will cost £55. And this way you do get all the experience to avoid the errors, disappointments, failures, and blind allies we've been down over the years. For example - always leave a pencil with the card - there must be something compelling about a card and a pencil left on their tabel whilst they wait for breakfast - you'll get 90-95% response in this way.
